REPORT CARD / T.J. SIMERS : Pretty Good Marks for a Field Trip

Share

B QUARTERBACKS

The Vatican has been asked to declare them as modern-day miracles: Billy Joe Tolliver throws 94 passes without an interception and Chargers win in Seattle.

C+ RUNNING BACKS

It’s like trying to tug a bone free from an ornery dog--Marion Butts has carried the ball 159 times and has yet to fumble. Rod Bernstine’s second effort inspires.

B+ RECEIVERS

Whoever said nice guys finish last never met Quinn Early. It takes Arthur Cox about as long to run a pass route as it does for planet earth to make a full revolution.

A OFFENSIVE LINE

They’re not supposed to be any good, but waiting for these lugs to collapse is like waiting for the Leaning Tower of Piza to topple. Time to surrender and hail them.

A DEFENSIVE LINE

Leslie O’Neal has an AFC player of the week kind of game and would have salted away the award if he hadn’t treated the football like a greased pig in the end zone.

A- LINEBACKERS

Take away John L. Williams’ improvised 21-yard touchdown run, and Williams and Derrick Fenner average 2.8 yards a carry. Ground Chuck goes belly up.

C+ DEFENSIVE BACKS

Rookie Donald Frank gets scorched deep, but Krieg overthrows receiver. Loss of Martin Bayless, and lingering injuries to Vencie Glenn and Gill Byrd take toll.

A SPECIAL TEAMS

Chargers pull off the impossible in Kingdome with the improbable: They outdo the Seahawks special teams. Bobby Beathard finds gem in seventh round in Nate Lewis.

A COACHING

Stella, the Charger receptionist, took more than 50 calls from fans apologizing for criticizing Dan Henning. Coach of year votes may be cast at 280-2111.
