MEINERS OAKS : Fire Destroys House but Injures No One

Share

An older, three-bedroom house in Meiners Oaks was destroyed by a fire that erupted soon after its tenant left early Friday morning.

No one was injured in the blaze. Investigators said the cause of the 6:22 a.m. fire will not be determined until next week.

The all-wood house at 301 S. Padre Juan Ave. was declared a total loss with $100,000 in damage and $4,000 loss to the contents, a Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The fire erupted in an attached garage and engulfed half the house before the first engine arrived at 6:25 a.m., fire investigator David Chovanec said.

Six fire engines with 35 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire and had it extinguished at 6:47 a.m.

The street was blocked off for several hours until a Southern California Edison crew repaired a downed power line.

Jack Tracy, a Ventura builder, said he bought the house in October and rented it to two workers who were to help him remodel it.

“I was going to start work on it next week,” Tracy said as he watched it burn.
