CITY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Muhammad Fills Void, Leads Fairfax to Victory

Playing without starting running back Mario Mattison, who was out because of chicken pox, Fairfax High struggled in the beginning but regrouped in the second half to defeat Pacific Palisades, 21-6, Friday at Palisades. The game was the end of the regular season for both schools.

Quarterback Rahim Muhammad filled Mattison’s void, completing five of nine passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 21 yards in 10 carries and one touchdown. Fairfax, The Times’ fifth-ranked City team and the top-seeded team in the 3-A Division playoffs, finished the regular season 7-0 in the Coastal Conference and 9-0 overall. Palisades is 3-3-1 and 3-4-2.

Locke 28, Jefferson 12--Locke ended the City regular season with a victory at home that clinched the Southeastern Conference’s Central League title. The Saints (6-2 in the conference and 8-2 overall) dominated the second half after leading, 14-6, at halftime.

Quarterback Bobby Savannah led the way,completing eight of 16 passes for 208 yards, including touchdown throws of 20 and 75 yards to Antoine Redmond. Redmond also rushed for 70 yards in 15 carries and one touchdown. Jefferson finished 2-6, 3-6-1.

Westchester 20, Los Angeles 0--The Comets utilized a strong rushing game to shut out Los Angeles in a City game at Los Angeles.

Running back Walter Grissam rushed for 150 yards and one touchdown in 31 carries and Hubert Rush added 59 yards in nine carries and two touchdowns for Westchester (6-1 in the Coastal Conference and 8-2 overall). Los Angeles finished 1-6 and 2-7.

Hollywood 29, Lincoln 20--The Sheiks snapped a six-game losing streak by closing the City regular season with a Northern Conference victory at home.

Mo Camara scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter on a 95-yard kickoff return to give Hollywood the lead, 15-14. Quarterback Jessie Elkins scored the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter on a one-yard keeper to put Hollywood ahead, 22-14.

Hollywood (1-6 and 4-6) won its first three games of the season and then lost the next six.

Banning 54, Narbonne 0--The Pilots, The Times’ second-ranked City team, rolled up 404 rushing yards against winless Narbonne (0-7, 0-10) at Banning. Travis Davis had 147 yards in 16 carries and three touchdowns, and Eric Johnson added 145 yards in eight carries and one touchdown.

Carson 54, Washington 12--The top-ranked Colts had little trouble in their regular-season finale at home. John Walsh completed 17 of 30 passes for 397 yards and five touchdowns. Latario Rachal had three catches for 171 yards.

Verdugo Hills 7, Franklin 6--Quarterback Danny Gonzales threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Mark Alcantar with 1:30 remaining in the Northeastern League game, but host Franklin’s victory bid failed when Fabian Picon dropped Gonzales’ two-point conversion pass.
