Laguna Hills quarterback Casey Sullivan threw two touchdown passes to help beat his former team, St. Monica, 21-17, in the first round of the Division VII playoffs. Sullivan, who quarterbacked St. Monica a year ago, transfered to Laguna Hills over the summer and led the Hawks to the Pacific Coast League championship.

LATE HEROICS

After Brea-Olinda’s Marco Hernandez tied the game with a 24-yard field goal, teammate Mark McLeran forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set up the game-winning drive.

Travis Lucero kicked a 24-yard field goal with 6:38 to play, capping a comeback in which Santa Margarita twice rallied from seven-point deficits to defeat Claremont, 17-14, in a Division IV playoff game.

ON THE RECORD

‘It was just about then that I started thinking, “This is too good to be true,” ’

--Eric Patton, Capistrano Valley coach, after the Cougars broke out to a 31-3 second-quarter lead on the way to a 59-30 Division II playoff victory over Ventura.

NOTEWORTHY

Scoreboard Assault: Capistrano Valley and Ventura combined for 89 points in the opening round of the Division II playoffs, surpassing the outcome of any 1989 postseason game. Mater Dei’s 58-31 victory over Long Beach Poly Friday also totaled 89 points.

Last year, Bassett beat Bonita, 42-40, in the first round of Division V play, and Lompoc beat Temple City, 48-38, in the semifinals of Division VII.

But neither Capistrano Valley nor Mater Dei could individually compare to Whittier Christian’s 72-point explosion agaist Leffingwell Christian in the opening round of Division IX in 1989.
