Chula Vista
A Chula Vista police sedan struck and killed a pedestrian along Main Street late Friday, Chula Vista police said.
Police are investigating the incident, which occurred shortly after 11 p.m. near the intersection of Main and Seventh streets, authorities said.
The dead man was identified as Juan Jose Velazquez, a 48-year-old construction worker. He was dead at the scene.
The officer, Susan Lunsford, a five-year veteran, was driving a marked patrol car when the collision occurred, police said. She was answering a radio call but did not have on her emergency lights or siren.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was walking east on Main Street when he was struck. The spot is a 3-way intersection with no marked crosswalks, police said.
Officer Lunsford suffered minor injuries.
