COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Wins, Advances to State Volleyball Tourney

Golden West College advanced to the state volleyball tournament by defeating Southwestern, 15-5, 15-3, 15-9, in a second-round Southern California Regional match at Golden West.

Golden West (21-3), ranked second in the state behind De Anza, was led by Kysha Green’s 12 kills and five blocks. Joli Eberhart had 10 kills and seven digs and Brenda Irby had six kills, nine digs and five aces for Golden West, which won the match in only 52 minutes.

Three of Irby’s aces came in the third game during which Golden West came back from a 7-0 deficit to win. Southwestern finishes the season 14-4.

Golden West next plays Hancock College at 8 p.m. Friday in Santa Maria.

In women’s basketball:

Rancho Santiago 72, Santa Barbara 65--Cheryl Henderson and Latanya Trotter each scored 19 points to lead Rancho Santiago. Henderson also had 11 rebounds for Rancho Santiago (4-3), which trailed early in the second half. Heather Frowiss had 33 points and 18 rebounds for Santa Barbara.

Chaffey 46, Orange Coast 45--Chrissy Sweeney, who scored 17 points, made one of two free throws with 38 seconds left to lift visiting Chaffey (5-2).
