Virginia’s chances of upsetting No. 11 Pittsburgh didn’t look very good when Bryant Stith limped to the bench, favoring a sprained right ankle with more than 8 1/2 minutes to play in the first half.

But he was able to return in the second half and scored 20 of his 28 points to lead the 21st-ranked Cavaliers to an 84-80 victory at Richmond, Va., in the ACC-Big East Challenge.

“He made a miraculous recovery,” Pitt Coach Paul Evans said.

Stith scored 10 consecutive points to bring the Cavaliers back from a 44-40 halftime deficit to tie the score, 52-52. Stith scored seven in a row late in the game, including a three-point play and a three-point shot, in a 13-3 run that gave Virginia a 78-71 lead with 2:03 left.
