Error Brings Cross-Country Scoring Change

Share

A new scoring system will be implemented in next year’s City cross-country meet to prevent an error similar to the one that caused the Garfield High boys’ team to miss the State meet this season.

Labels with school and name will be worn by each runner and removed and pasted on a results board. Place cards were given to runners this year and then turned in to determine team scoring.

A computer breakdown forced the meet to be hand-scored by the place cards, and it was discovered three days later that Garfield had actually qualified for the meet.

“Our backup system is no good,” City Commissioner Hal Harkness said. “Cross-country scoring is a nightmare.”
