COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Georgetown, St. John’s Win It for Big East

Alonzo Mourning scored 22 points and No. 6 Georgetown held on after blowing most of a 16-point lead to beat No. 5 Duke, 79-74, Wednesday night at Landover, Md., in the ACC-Big East Challenge.

Mourning had eight points in an early 15-0 run and blocked a shot with 10 seconds left for Georgetown (4-0). The victory gave the Big East a 5-1 lead over the ACC and clinched the eight-game series.

In an earlier game, No. 17 St. John’s defeated No. 20 Georgia Tech, 73-72, as Jason Buchanan made one of two free throws with 3.7 seconds left in overtime as the Redmen blew an 11-point lead late in regulation before winning.

In the later game, Bill McCaffrey led the Blue Devils (5-2) with 20 points, including 12 as Duke pulled to 75-74 in the second half. The Blue Devils staged a 16-9 rally after trailing 64-48 with 8:01 left.

Bobby Hurley’s three-point basket with 57 seconds remaining cut Georgetown’s lead to 75-72 and, after Lamont Morgan missed one free throw and the Hoyas were called for a lane violation, Brian Davis’ two free throws with 29 seconds left pulled Duke within one.

Freshman Charles Harrison followed five seconds later with two free throws and Mourning blocked Davis’ last shot.

Dikembe Mutombo had 13 rebounds and 14 points and freshman Robert Churchwell added 11 points for the Hoyas. Mutombo was carried off the court with about five minutes left because of cramps in his right leg. He returned in the final minute.

Christian Laettner had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Duke.

St. John’s, with the victory over Georgia Tech, improved to 4-0. Malik Sealy scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Redmen.

Malcolm Mackey and Matt Geiger each had 16 points for the Yellow Jackets. Anderson scored 14 despite missing 15 of 20 field goal attempts.

In overtime, Tech’s Bryan Hill scored five points and St. John’s Robert Werdann had six, but it all came down to Buchanan’s shot from the line.

No. 2 Arizona 100, Northern Arizona 64--Brian Williams scored 16 of his 22 points in the first half and finished with six blocked shots to lead the Wildcats (7-0) at Flagstaff.

A 19-4 burst early in the second--including three consecutive breakaway baskets off Northern Arizona turnovers--turned a close game into a rout. The Lumberjacks turned the ball over 11 times in the second half, during which the Wildcats led by as many as 41 points.

Deron Johnson added 17 points for Arizona. Matt Muehlebach and Ed Stokes added 11 points apiece. Archie Tolliver had 17 points for Northern Arizona.

No. 3 Arkansas 114, Louisiana Tech 97--Todd Day scored seven of his 23 points in the final seconds of the first half as the Razorbacks pulled away from the previously unbeaten Bulldogs at Little Rock, Ark.

Oliver Miller, held to two points in the first half, scored 18 in the second as the Razorbacks (6-1) cruised in the final 20 minutes. Their biggest lead was 25 points.

Arkansas also got 19 points from Ron Huery, 13 from Arlyn Bowers and 10 from Butch Morris.

Louisiana Tech (5-1) was led by Ronald Ellis with 21 points.

No. 24 Temple 76, St. Bonaventure 52--Mark Macon scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half as the Owls (2-1, 1-0) beat the Bonnies (1-4, 0-2) in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Olean, N.Y.

Dave Degitz scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half as Penn State (4-1) defeated Illinois 78-68 at State College, Pa. Larry Smith scored 18 to lead the Illini (4-3). . . . Doman Lopez scored 29 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to led Fordham to a 79-66 victory over Hofstra at New York. . . . Jean Derouillere scored 21 points and reserve Marcus Ziegler had 20 as Kansas State (3-1) defeated previously unbeaten Wyoming, 81-68, at Manhattan, Kan. . . . Derrick Daniels made a three-point shot with one second left as Houston (4-1) overcame a 20-point deficit and edged St. Louis, 85-84, at St. Louis. . . . Joe Lightfoot scored 21 points to lead Western Kentucky to a 90-77 victory over Bowling Green at Bowling Green, Ky. . . . Kenny Woods made two foul shots with three seconds remaining to preserve Richmond’s 67-63 victory over Virginia Commonwealth at Richmond, Va. Curtis Blair led the Spiders with 24 points. . . . Junior forward Steve Spurlock scored 36 points and had 18 rebounds to lead Appalachian State over North Carolina Charlotte, 85-79, at Charlotte. . . . Texas Tech had to come from behind to beat NAIA Adams State, 53-50, at Lubbock, Tex. The Indians’ Yul Wilson missed a three-point shot with four seconds left that would have tied it. Derex Butts scored 16 points to lead the Raiders (3-3). . . . David Wesley scored 32 points and Joey Fatta had eight steals as Baylor beat Iowa State, 91-72, at Waco, Tex., to improve to 5-0. WEST

San Jose State 70, Washington State 69--Terry Cannon, a sophomore from Los Angeles’ Crenshaw High, hit an 18-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the Spartans a nonconference victory over the Cougars at San Jose.

Washington State guard Neil Derrick had made a driving shot from the lane with six seconds left to give the Cougars a 69-68 lead. After a time out, San Jose State drove the length of the floor for Cannon’s open jump shot.

Guard Troy Batiste scored 19 points to lead San Jose State. Derrick led the Cougars with 26.

Isacc Austin scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half to lead Arizona State to a 59-54 victory over previously undefeated New Mexico at Tempe, Ariz. The Sun Devils (4-1) went ahead to stay, 40-37, with 17:56 left on a three-point basket by freshman Stevin Smith. . . . Doug Meekins scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Washington to an 84-60 victory over Chaminade at Seattle. The Huskies improved to 4-0.
