San Diego State’s “youth was evident,” said Aztec Coach Beth Burns, in SDSU’s 73-65 loss to Kansas State at the Dial Classic in Long Beach. Kieishsha Garnes led the Aztecs (2-3) with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Diana Miller led Kansas State (3-2) with 16 points. Kansas State led, 39-26, at halftime.

Point Loma Nazarene dropped to 4-2 after an 88-78 loss to host Chapman College in a nonconference game. Shannon Abrams led PLNC with 31 points and 11 rebounds, Alicia Harasty added 16 points.

The University of San Diego defeated San Jose State, 90-66, in the Oregon State Tournament for its first victory of the season. USD’s Christi English led all scorers with 15 points. Angie Straub had 14 points for the Toreras. Both teams are 1-3.

Oceanside’s Bill Conel and San Diego’s John Shelton upset top-seeded Ed Baumer and Hal Bowers, 6-1, 6-3, to win the men’s 75 doubles at the Senior Grand Prix Masters Championships at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Conel also defeated Carlsbad’s Hal Miller, 6-0, 6-2, to win the 80 singles title.

Claremont’s Pete Welsh defeated top-seeded Bob Seymour of Del Mar, 6-3, 6-2, to win the men’s 65 singles title, and San Diego’s Virginia Glass defeated Bonita’s Fran Wakefield, 6-1, 7-5 to win the women’s 60. Other winners were Fran Bushman of Riverside and Vista’s Dave Martin in 65 doubles, Arcadia’s Sven Davidson (men’s 60 singles), and Las Vegas’ Bill Davis and Pancho Gonzalez (men’s 60 doubles).
