Cleveland Notches an Easy Conference Victory Over El Camino Real, 98-50

The Cleveland High boys’ basketball team looked like the high-scoring Cavaliers of old Monday afternoon, drubbing visiting El Camino Real, 98-50, in the Northwest Valley Conference opener for both teams.

Five Cavaliers scored in double figures, including Brandon Martin with 25 points and Kenny Collins with 22.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Royal 95, Crespi 93--Kevin Hambley scored 27 points and grabbed 23 rebounds and teammate Jared Byrne scored 22 points with 16 rebounds as Royal (4-1) won a wild first-round game in the Beverly Hills tournament.

Crespi’s Rasaan Hall scored 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, but the Celts fell to 3-2.

Granada Hills 108, San Fernando 59--Jerry Allen scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and handed out six assists and Gene Varshtak added 18 points as visiting Granada Hills (6-1, 1-0) raced to a Northwest Valley Conference win.

Taft 65, Chatsworth 50--Casey Sheahan scored 21 points as Taft won its Northwest Valley Conference opener at Chatsworth.

Sherman Oaks CES 58, Canoga Park 39--Mitch Shenkin scored 18 points and Khalif Muhammad added 17 points and 14 rebounds as visiting Sherman Oaks CES improved to 3-0 in Valley Pac-8 Conference play, 6-1 overall.

Reseda 72, Kennedy 64--Guard James Chen scored a game-high 22 points and forward Marquis Burns added 18 for visiting Reseda (2-3, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

North Hollywood 89, Sylmar 29--Guard Robert Hill scored 31 points and had nine assists and eight steals to lead North Hollywood (2-2, 1-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Grant 71, Monroe 41--Sean McMahon paced Grant (3-1, 2-0) with 14 points while Brunell Mori added 10 points and 10 rebounds in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Montclair Prep 91, St. Francis 63--J.T. Billingslea scored 27 points and Chris Sanger added 23 points and 12 rebounds as Montclair Prep (6-1) won a first-round game in the Flintridge Prep tournament.

Canyon 89, Hart 65--Jermaine Nixon scored 32 points for Canyon (3-2) in a nonleague game at Hart (3-4).
