Padres Trade Mark Parent to the Rangers

Third baseman Scott Coolbaugh was traded by the Texas Rangers to the San Diego Padres today in exchange for backup catcher Mark Parent.

Parent, 29, hit .222 with 3 homers and 16 RBI in 65 games with San Diego. He hit .306 against left-handed pitching.

Parent, a backup to Benito Santiago, had a .992 fielding percentage.

Coolbaugh hit .200 with 2 homers and 13 RBI in 67 games with the Rangers. His career big league average is .216.

Texas also announced that right-handed pitcher Rich Gossage will be given a tryout during the club’s mini-camp for pitchers Jan. 7-11 at Arlington Stadium.

Gossage, 39, was out of baseball for the first half of the 1990 season before signing with the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks of the Japanese Pacific League on July 4.

He was 2-3 with a 4.40 earned run average and 8 saves in 28 games for the Hawks.
