School: Huntington Beach High School Sport: Basketball Position: Forward Class: Senior

As the Oilers’ only player returning from last season’s team, Huntington Beach is depending on Abdi for leadership as well as scoring. So far, he has done little wrong as Huntington Beach, an 11-15 team last season, is 5-1 and Friday defeated then-No. 1 Estancia, 52-51, for the championship of the La Quinta tournament. Abdi, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, had 15 points, five rebounds and five blocked shots in the upset, but his statistics in earlier games were even more impressive. Abdi, a 6-foot-2 forward who jumps center, had 29 points and 11 rebounds in a victory over Cypress in the first round and 22 points and 15 rebounds in a semifinal victory over Katella. “I think if you talk to other coaches, they’ll tell you he’s virtually unstoppable,” Huntington Beach Coach Roy Miller said. “He’ll find a way to score whether it’s from the outside, inside or from the free-throw line.” Other top performers:

John Molle, who scored 35 points for Irvine in a 106-70 victory over University and 31 in a 77-46 victory over Woodbridge.

Jason Szczuka, who scored six of Woodbridge’s eight goals in three soccer victories, had one in a 3-2 victory over Laguna Hills, three in a 3-1 victory over Troy and two in a 2-0 victory over Costa Mesa.
