Border Patrol agents seized more than 635 pounds of marijuana with a street value of more than $1 million in two unrelated incidents Wednesday, officials said.
A truck entering the United States illegally east of the San Ysidro border crossing at about 2:40 a.m. led agents on a 20-minute chase that ended in the 7200 block of Otay Mesa Road.
Thirteen bundles of marijuana weighing a total of 460 pounds were found in the bed of the truck, officials said. Guadalupe Rodriguez Torres, 28, and Lauro Escatel Ramasco, 30, both of Mexico, were arrested on suspicion of unlawfully importing a controlled substance. A third suspect fled on foot.
Border Patrol agents also found five bags of marijuana weighing weighing a total of 175 pounds abandoned on a trail heavily used by immigrants 2 miles west of the border crossing, the statement said. No suspects were found.
