BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cleveland Rebounds to Subdue San Pedro

Cleveland High rallied from a 12-point deficit after three quarters to defeat San Pedro, 71-69, in a semifinal game of the L. A. Invitational tournament at Los Angeles City College on Friday night.

Cleveland trailed, 55-43, entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Pirates (10-2), 28-14, over the final eight minutes.

“We have this thing about playing for two quarters and not doing anything after that,” Cleveland Coach Kevin Crider said. “We just didn’t move the ball around, we didn’t work hard.”

The Cavalier comeback was led by junior swingman Brandon Martin, who scored a game-high 20 points. Forward Kayheed Murray added 19 and teammates Carlos Vasquez (16) and Kenny Collins (15) also reached double figures.

Murray scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter for Cleveland (7-2). With the score tied, 69-69, Cleveland regained possession with 17 seconds left and called a timeout. Vasquez scored the game-winner on a 14-foot jump shot with two seconds to play.

In other boys’ games:

Santa Clara 59, Chandler (Ariz.) 53--Chandler’s Josh Hall helped his team take an eight-point lead with 15 first-half points, but Santa Clara’s Chris Cole helped limit him to four points in the second half to key a Santa Clara comeback in a semifinal game of the Page tournament.

Isaiah Mustafa and Anthony Maestas led Santa Clara (10-1) with 14 points each. Art Barron and Cole each scored 11.

Saugus 51, Hart 33--Saugus center Greg Yumbar scored seven of his game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead the host Centurions to a nonleague victory over rival Hart.

In the first half, Hart made just five of 28 shots (17.8%) from the field and Saugus made nine of 29 (31.0%). Saugus (7-3) held a 19-11 lead at halftime.

Yumbar added 14 rebounds and teammate Chris Hernandez posted 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Center Ali Peek scored a team-high 12 points for Hart (4-5).

Harvard 90, Chadwick 62--Spencer Miller, a 6-8 center, was eight of eight from the field--including two three-point baskets--and three of three on free throws to lead Harvard (6-2) with 21 points in the nonleague game.

Sylmar 65, L.A. Baptist 44--Sylmar broke out of a tight first half with a 24-7 third-quarter outburst in a home nonleague game.

Mike Richardson led Sylmar (7-3) with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Camarillo 89, Oxnard 65--David Harbour scored 40 points to lead Camarillo (4-1) in a nonleague game at home.

Harbour made 15 of 27 from the field and was 10 of 16 from the free-throw line.

Campbell Hall 112, Windward 37--Alex Lopez and teammate Taylor Williams each scored 20 points to lead the Vikings (8-0) in a semifinal game of the Campbell Hall tournament.

Highland Hall 84, Villanova Prep 63--Highland Hall (5-3) outscored Villanova Prep, 34-6, in the second quarter of a consolation semifinal game of the Campbell Hall tournament. John Klejnot had 33 points, 16 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the Hawks.

MEN

Occidental 82, UC Santa Cruz 69--Ryan Cartnal of Occidental (4-4) made 13 of 18 shots, including five of six three-point attempts, and led all scorers with 34 points in the nonleague game.

Oxnard 87, Chaffey 75--Oxnard bounced back from two earlier losses behind Don Mitchell’s 28 points in the nonconference game.

Valley 124, Los Angeles Pacesetters 80--Valley finished third in the East Los Angeles tournament but lost starting guard Rick Garrick, who injured an ankle early in the second half.

Tory Stephens led Valley (9-6) with a season-high 30 points. Russell Baldwin had 18 points and 14 rebounds and Art Kirksey had 15 points and 15 rebounds.

WOMEN

Sequoias 77, Canyons 59--Despite Keira Irwin’s 17 points, Canyons (7-5) lost a nonleague game to visiting Sequoias (12-3).

Pierce 72, Foothill 60--Led by forward Lisa Little with 23 points, Pierce coasted to its ninth consecutive victory.
