Sheriff Sherman Block said today that he has prostate cancer and will undergo surgery Jan. 7, but he stressed that he plans to return “to full duty” after six weeks of recuperation.

“I’ve just been sworn in for my new term and I look forward with optimism to 1991 and the duration of my term,” Block told reporters.

Block, who has been sheriff since Jan. 18, 1982, made the announcement at the end of his regular monthly news conference. He said his condition had been diagnosed as glandular cancer of the prostate and he would enter Norris Cancer Hospital for surgery.

“The indication is that there is no secondary location. I am in exceptional health otherwise,” Block, 66, said.

During his recuperation, he said Undersheriff Robert Edmonds will be in charge and they will consult daily.
