Tom Coughlin, an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers and New York Giants since 1984, was appointed head coach at Boston College, replacing the ousted Jack Bicknell.
Coughlin, 44, who has coached receivers for the playoff-bound Giants for three years, was chosen by new Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk for a second tour of duty with the Eagles.
Coughlin was an original member of Bicknell’s staff in 1980. He helped develop Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie and a powerful passing attack that took the team to the Tangerine Bowl in 1982 and the Liberty Bowl in 1983.
Coughlin originally was considered a leading candidate for the job when Bicknell was fired after four consecutive losing seasons. However, it appeared his chances dimmed because of unavailability until New York’s NFC East Division champions are finished with the NFL playoffs.
