HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Helix Overcomes Redondo Union

Helix defeated Redondo Union, 55-52, in the championship game Saturday of the Spartan Classic at Chula Vista High.

In the final minutes, Reynell Dukes scored a three-pointer and after being fouled and made one of his two shots giving Helix a 54-52 lead. After a timeout, Brandon Sanders was fouled and scored to put Helix ahead, 55-52.

With seconds remaining, after Redondo’s Dave Cottey missed his three-point attempt, teammate Mike Boyce rebounded and passed off Ron Grim. Grim was fouled at the buzzer.

Helix (9-4) was led by Lloyd Lake who scored 18 and had six rebounds. Jason Falconer scored 10 points and had nine rebounds for the Highlanders.

Grim scored 13 points, and Jason Correa and Derrick Gonzales each scored 12 points for Redondo (9-5).

San Dieguito 89, Hilltop 63--Matt De La Pena scored 31 points to lead San Dieguito (7-4) to a third-place victory. De La Pena led all scorers in the tournament with 101 total points. Sean Howard added 27 points and had 10 rebounds for San Dieguito. Chris White scored 22 points and seven rebounds for Hilltop (5-8).

Chula Vista 65, Oceanside 58--Chula Vista jumped to a 40-29 halftime lead enroute to a fifth-place victory. Donnie Edwards scored 18 points and had eight rebounds and Jerome Green scored 17 points for Chula Vista (7-6). Ken McDuffy added 10 points and seven assists for the Spartans. Larry Tanner and Marlon Jenkins each scored 14 points for Oceanside (3-8).

Mira Mesa 77, Crawford 55--Mike Phillips scored 17 points and had nine rebounds and David Butler scored 15 for Mira Mesa (7-6) in the seventh place game. Ryan Cunningham scored eight points and had six assists for Mira Mesa. Crawford was led by Lee Mills with 24 points and Kadir Nelson with 20 points. Nelson also had six assists. Alleh Hille led Crawford (2-7) with 13 rebounds.

Mt. Carmel Invitational

USDHS 59, Mt. Carmel 54--After trailing, 31-24, at halftime, the Dons (7-2) regrouped the outscored Mt. Carmel in each of the remaining quarters to claim the championship.

Eric Barajas scored 26 points and Dave Withers scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds for USDHS. Joe Clark led the Dons with 12 rebounds.

Ryan Wooton led Mt. Carmel with 18 points.

Monte Vista 59, Rancho Bernardo 55--Monte Vista outscored Rancho Bernardo, 22-18, in the fourth quarter breaking a 37-37 tie after the third quarter. Aaron Elliott led Monte Vista with 15 points and Derek Ellingston, Paul Watson and Robert Holms each scored nine points. Rancho Bernardo (2-6) was led by David Santos with 17 points and five rebounds. Bill McMahon and Greg Hanson each added 11 points.

Ramona Tournament

Agoura 89, Ramona 78--In the championship, Alfonso Del La Nuez scored 33 points in a losing effort for Ramona (5-3).

Southwest 98, Castle Park 52--Jerry Racette scored 20 points to lead Southwest (6-6) to a third-place victory. Southwest led, 36-29, at halftime. Humberto Amador led Castle Park with 14 points.

Brea Olinda Tournament

St. Anthony (Long Beach) 68, Fallbrook 50--Chris Miller led Fallbrook (7-5) with 23 points and six rebounds for Fallbrook (7-5) in the game for ninth place. Bob Nolan added nine points and Steve Pack scored eight for Fallbrook. Rick Price scored 29 points for St. Anthony’s, which led, 33-19 at halftime.

Rancho Buena Vista 77, Centennial 62--No. 1 Rancho Buena Vista took a fifth place in Brea, with Darryl Parker scoring a whooping 39 points, twice as many as Centennial’s leading scorer, and pulled down 15 rebounds. Teammate Brad Grubaugh put up 13 points for RBV (5-6), who scored 23 of 35 free throws to Centennial’s six of 10.

Sweetwater Classic

Kearny 72, Mar Vista 41--Darnay Scott’s 15 and Damien Victor’s 11 points paced the Komets.

St. Augustine 73, Montgomery 67--Edel Shaw (18 points) and Leslie Shaw (16) were the two highest scorers in the loss. Mark Magee scored 14 in the loss.

San Diego 71, Sweetwater 69--No. 9 San Diego was paced by J.R Greer’s 19 points. Brandon Tennant had a game-high 21 for Sweetwater.

Orange Christmas Tournament

Morse 69, Orange 52--In the fifth-place game, Jamar Lavender scored 23 points and was aided by Darnell Cherry’s 15.

GIRLS

Ramona Rotary Roundball Tournament

University City 56, Kearny 27--In the championship, tournament MVP Charlotte Kornik scored 16 points to pace UC. Teammates Jenny Gross and Amy Cleveland added 13 and 10 points. For runner-up Kearny, Melissa Krause put up 19 points.

Capistrano Valley Christian 46, USDHS 41--Kelly O’Neill led USDHS with 19 points. Capo Valley Christian was led by Heidi Elliott with 10 points.

Santana 60, Ramona 46--Santana came back from a nine-points (35-22) halftime deficit in the consolation final. Together Stephanie Thompson (27) and Desiree Weimann (23) scored 50 of Santana’s points. Ramona was led by Kisha Riggs with 17 points.

Ben Fischer Tournament

Poway 72, Granite Hills 41--Jamie Shadian scored 16 points enroute to Poway’s championship victory. Christina Adams led Granite Hills (10-4) with 19 points. Poway (8-1) led 36-25 at halftime.

Chula Vista 53, Patrick Henry 30--Allison Hines led Chula Vista with 28 points.

Point Loma 47, San Marcos 33--Stacy Wainwright led the Pointers to third with a 14 point, eight rebound, seven steal effort. Teammate Lisa Griego had 12 points for Point Loma (9-2).. Tami Oviatt led San Marcos with 12.
