SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Los Angeles Harbor basketball Coach Ken Curry was not happy his Seahawks’ 105-96 Southern California Athletic League loss to Los Angeles City College on Saturday night. He also didn’t like the officiating.

Harbor had to withstand a tenacious full-court press early and it never could get its offense rolling.

“Going into the game I knew (City) were a better team than we are at this point of the season.” Curry said. “In this game, as in most, you are going to get some calls against you that you do not agree with, but we got some offensive fouls called against us early that really took us out of the game.”

Harbor’s starting center, Paul Snow, was called for two offensive fouls in the first three minutes of play. He eventually fouled out three minutes into the second half after scoring only two points.

After trailing by as many as 30 points, the Seahawks made the game interesting in the closing minutes by cutting the Cubs’ advantage to 103-95 with 12 seconds remaining.

The Cubs went on a 15-1 run to take an early 19-5 lead. Harbor committed 24 turnovers in the first half.

After a basket by the Seahawks’ Jon Zaletel brought Harbor to within 10, the Cubs went on a 11-1 run to increase their lead to 30-11 with 10:41 remaining in the first half. The Seahawks trailed, 56-31, at halftime.

The Cubs, who improved to 17-3 and 2-0 in the SCAC, continued their pressure defense in the second half and went up, 89-64, with 10 minutes remaining. The Cubs Franke Rodriquez led all scorers with 21 points and his teammates Charlo Davis and Aaron Courseault had 15 apiece.

Zaletel led the Seahawks with 21 points. Armando A. Del Cid scored 17 and Curtis Thomas and Chris Mijanovic each scored 16 points for Harbor. Harbor dropped to 8-12 overall and 1-1 in SCAC play.
