ROUNDUP : Dana Hills Delay Game Puts El Toro on Skids in South Coast League

Dana Hills High School got off to a quick start, then used a four-corner offense in the second half to upset El Toro, 83-63, in the South Coast League opener for both schools Wednesday night in El Toro.

Dana Hills (9-6, 1-0) opened a 25-22 lead in the first quarter. The Dolphins made 29 of 43 field goal attempts and nearly half of their shots came on a layups out of the four-corner delay.

Forward Derrick Walsh led the hot-shooting Dolphins with 22 points, making 8 of 12 field-goal attempts. Reserve Kevin Baden added a season-high 14 points, all of his baskets coming on layups.

Rob Johnson led El Toro (8-7, 0-1) with 27 points, but the closest the Chargers could come in the second half was six points.

In other South Coast League games:

Irvine 58, Mission Viejo 51--John Molle scored 38 points and Brian Boothroyd 18 for host Irvine (14-2, 1-0). Matt Brummel scored 22 for Mission Viejo (5-10, 0-1).

Capistrano Valley 73, San Clemente 52--Visiting Capistrano Valley (14-3, 1-0) trailed, 32-29, at halftime but used a one-three-one fullcourt trap defense to outscore San Clemente, 19-4, in the decisive third period.

Brett McCorkle scored 23 for Capistrano Valley and Tom Aierey had 21. Bill Hagedorn had 18 for San Clemente (9-7, 0-1).

San Clemente center Eddie Morgan, the county’s leading rebounder, got in foul trouble early and failed to score. He had just four rebounds, 12 below his average.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 88, Loyola 60--J.J. Ballesteros scored 21 points and Reggie Geary had 15 along with nine assists and eight steals for host Mater Dei (13-4, 1-1). Jason Janeski had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Mater Dei. Freshman Toby Bailey led Loyola (8-7, 1-1) with 24 points.

Servite 75, St. John Bosco 65--Adam Anderson scored 10 of his 31 points points in the fourth quarter and Dan Coady scored six of his 10 in the fourth quarter as Servite (12-4, 2-0) overcame a 50-45 deficit at the end of three quarters.

Bishop Amat 67, Santa Margarita 62--Freshman guard Jelani Gardner had 28 points for host Bishop Amat (11-5, 2-0). Santa Margarita (10-5, 0-2) got 26 points from Dan Bathey.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 76, Sonora 67--Guard Craig Olson hit two three-point shots and had eight of his 18 points in the first quarter as Fullerton opened a 25-14 lead and rolled in its league opener. Guard Chris Hartshorn led Fullerton (8-7, 1-0) with 22 points.

Sunny Hills 70, Sonora 40--Junior forward Teri Mann scored 20 points as Sunny Hills (10-5, 1-0) won its third consecutive game and ninth of its last 10.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 89, Santiago 76--Leon Vickers scored 17 and Chris Singletary added 16 for host Rancho Alamitos (5-6, 2-2). Santiago’s Paul Carrasco led all scorers with 22.

Pacifica 94, Los Amigos 77--Kevin Gaughen scored 35 points and Larry Nagata scored 23 for host Pacifica (7-5, 3-1).

Bolsa Grande 71, Garden Grove 69--Robert Fierro scored on a turnaround jumpshot from five-feet out with 26 seconds left to break a 69-69 tie, then stole the ball with 10 seconds to play to preserve the victory for Bolsa Grande (5-7, 3-1).

Sy Sayarath scored 16 points and Chinh Bui 14 for Bolsa Grande. Mark Perry scored 26 points for Garden Grove (7-7, 3-1).

Kennedy 72, La Quinta 47--Jermaine Galloway scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead host Kennedy (12-4, 4-0). Galloway also had 9 blocked shots, and Brian Cline added 18 points and seven rebounds for Kennedy. Dusty De Pree had 12 points for La Quinta.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 60, Magnolia 48--John Wilson scored 29 points and Adolfo Gomez had 17 for host Valencia (11-2, 1-0).

Western 59, Anaheim 41--Tom Barraza scored 16 points and Nurishi Stevenson had 17 to lead Western (13-1, 1-0) in a game at Anaheim that was marred by a brief bench-clearing fight in the third period. Greg Cole led scorers for Anaheim (7-7, 0-1) with 12 points.

The fight erupted after players from both sides scrambled for a loose ball. Several people from the stands also joined the fight, but order was restored quickly by coaches and security people. One player from each team was ejected.

Savanna 78, Brea-Olinda 55--Andy Trumpour scored 26 points and Toby Priest had 14 for host Savanna. Mike Ryan led Brea-Olinda with 18.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 77, Fountain Valley 74--Sophomore Matt Ambrose made two free throws in the final seconds as Huntington Beach held on, despite blowing a 25-point lead in the second half. Mustapha Abdi scored 32 points for Huntington Beach (10-4, 2-0).

Ocean View 61, Westminster 51--Marcel TenBerge scored 22 points to lead visiting Ocean View. Jesse Gomez and Eric Wilkins each scored 12 for Westminster (4-10, 0-2).

Edison 90, Santa Ana 56--Brandon Jessie scored 15 of his game-high 35 points in the first quarter as Edison ran off to a 27-9 lead. Todd Smyser added 15 points for Edison (12-4, 2-1). Chauncey Woolridge and Ramon Yerena each scored 16 for Santa Ana (10-6, 1-2.)
