USD’s Fuller Wins Title

University of San Diego senior Tonya Fuller won the Milwaukee Tennis Classic championship Sunday, her second tournament title of the 1990-91 season.

Fuller, seeded second, beat top-seeded Teri Whitlinger of Stanford in the finals, 6-4, 6-4.

Fuller won six matches, including a semifinal victory over seventh-seeded Stella Sampras of UCLA, 6-3, 7-5.

The victory qualified Fuller for the 1991 NCAA Indoor Championships next month at the University of Minnesota. Earlier this season, Fuller won the ITCA/Rolex Southern California Championships.

USD also was one of 16 teams picked to compete in the NCAA Indoor Team Championships Feb. 28-March 3 at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

YACHTING

Freedom’s Wing of the Chula Vista Yacht Club will compete today in the Little America’s Cup series off the coast of Melbourne, Australia. It received two days’ grace from the defending McCrae Yacht Club.

Trailing defender The Edge III by a minute in Friday’s Series opener but entering its best point of sail, Freedom’s Wing broke a crossbeam and was dismasted.
