Crespi High just did not have the talent, strength or depth to run its up-tempo game the length of the floor against visiting Notre Dame.

Notre Dame handed the Celts their worst loss this year on their court, beating Crespi, 99-62, in a Mission League game Wednesday.

The Celts could not stop the dynamic brother tandem of G.C. and Monte Marcaccini, who combined for 54 points.

G.C. Marcaccini, a 6-foot-5 senior who started playing basketball three years ago, went inside and outside to score a game-high 28 points despite a severe stomach ache. He also had 10 rebounds.

Monte, a 6-3 sophomore, added a season-high 26 points off the bench, the last 11 in the fourth quarter.

Monte, who hit four three-point shots, said he knew before tip-off that he would be hot.

“I felt it in warm-ups,” Monte said. “As soon as I started shooting, I knew I was on. I shot because I was hot.”

Crespi, conversely, was not so hot. The Celts shot 35% (20 of 57), while the Knights (15-3, 6-0 in league play) cashed in on 48% (34 of 71) of their field-goal attempts.

The Celts’ cold shooting performance did not limit itself to field-goal attempts. They were nearly as cold at the line, shooting just 47% (16 of 34).

In Crespi’s defense, the Celts (6-11, 0-6)have not had their original starters for any league game this season. In fact, one major component of the Loyola-type offense was visibly missing. The Celts’ big gun, senior Rasaan Hall, sat helplessly on the bench in street clothes as Celt fans chanted, “Free Rasaan.”

Hall, who was ejected in the third quarter of the Celts’ game against Alemany on Friday, was suspended for disciplinary reasons by the Crespi administration for two games. Hall, who is averaging 22.5 points a game, will return Friday against Bishop Montgomery.

Crespi led early, 5-0, but once the Knights started to roll, it was lights out. By halftime, Notre Dame had built a comfortable 52-30 lead.

The Knights used crisp passes and strong drives to the basket from G.C. Marcaccini and Marcello Anderson-Tellez, who scored 19 points, to run away from the Celts.

Crespi’s John Curtin, who is averaging 19.9 points, was held to 14 points, and Charles Aghajanian added 12 for the Celts.

Notre Dame’s Bob DaCorsi scored 16 points, 14 in the first half.
