Super Bowl Flap
It seems rather unfair that National Football League commissioner Paul Tagliabue has decided to remove the 1993 Super Bowl from Phoenix. This decision, of course, emerged from the fact that voters in the state of Arizona voted against a measure that would award a state holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. However, the city of Phoenix itself honors the holiday.
Will the league decide next that the Phoenix Cardinals be removed from Arizona? Maybe they should remove the New Orleans Saints from Louisiana because former Ku Klux Klan member David Duke had a seat in the state Senate. Perhaps the Chargers should be removed from San Diego because the city didn’t name a street after Dr. King.
The city of Phoenix could lose up to $250 million in revenue produced by the Super Bowl. San Diego may be the alternate site where the game would be moved to, and as a resident of San Diego County I would be excited; however, Phoenix deserves the game.
The NFL allows a team to play in Arizona so would it not be hypocritical to take away the Super Bowl? Also the league has only one black head coach, despite the fact that 70% of the players are black. The state of Arizona may need to alter their views of Dr. King. However, the city of Phoenix should not be punished for an opinion that is not their own.
