Toreras Score 2nd Bay Area Upset
For the second time in as many games, the University of San Diego women’s basketball team upset a highly-regarded team from the Bay Area.
After downing St. Mary’s in double overtime Thursday, the Toreras upset San Francisco, 64-57, Saturday night in the USD Sports Center.
Like Thursday, this one appeared headed for overtime, but the Toreras outscored the Dons, 11-2, over the final three minutes.
Trailing, 55-53, Chris Enger made two free throws and a layup off an offensive rebound and Angie Straub a baseline jumper. After a USF basket, Christi English, Enger and Straub combined for five free throws in the final minute.
Enger led the Toreras with 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks. English added 15 points and two blocks. USF’s Marlene Henderson scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the second half. She also had 14 rebounds.
USD, which defeated St. Mary’s, 86-79, in double overtime Thursday and have won five of six, improved to 8-9, 3-1. USF fell to 10-8, 2-2.
