Grammy Boosts Carey

Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

Mariah Carey is surging again. Her debut album, “Mariah Carey,” which has already sold more than 3 million copies, leaped two notches to No. 3. The latest rise is due to two factors: One is her new single, “Someday,” which rocketed up the pop chart to No. 17; the other is the recent news of all her Grammy nominations, which undoubtedly inspired some pop fans who weren’t familiar with her work to give it a listen. Chris Isaak’s “Heart Shaped World” is bolting up the chart, No. 52 to No. 37, largely thanks to his hit single, “Wicked Game”--No. 20 on the pop chart. One of the fastest rising albums on the chart is the C&C; Music Factory’s danceable “Gonna Make You Sweat,” which jumped from No. 40 to No. 27. The single of the title song is No. 2 on the pop chart. The pop-soul vocal group Surface continues to head the pop singles chart with “The First Time.”

* Rowdy, ribald rocker David Lee Roth is off to a fast start with his new one, “A Little Ain’t Enough.” It debuted at No. 46 and has a good shot at making the Top 10.
