SUNSET LEAGUE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Harris Goes Long Distance in Ocean View’s Victory

Ocean View High School’s Jim Harris, shooting from the parking lot it seemed, kept the Seahawks in the game Friday night.

Harris, a 5-foot-11 sophomore guard whose father, Jim, is coach, hit 10 of 19 shots from the field, including eight three-pointers, to score 35 points and lead the Seahawks to a 69-64 Sunset League victory over visiting Santa Ana. Even Harris’ two two-point field goals were barely within the three-point line.

Unable to generate much offense anywhere else, the Seahawks (11-8, 5-2 in league) needed every one of Harris’ long-distance baskets to turn back another standout performance by the Saints’ Chauncey Woolridge, who scored 32 points on 14-for-25 shooting and pulled down 17 rebounds.

Woolridge scored 20 of his points in the second half to lead two Saint rallies. After Ocean View took a 48-32 lead with 3 minutes 50 seconds left in the third quarter, Woolridge spurred a Saint comeback that narrowed the deficit to 53-48 with 7:25 left in the fourth quarter.

Harris scored three three-point baskets and a two-pointer to lead the Seahawks back to a comfortable 64-52 lead with 4:21 remaining. But the Saints (11-9, 3-5) came back behind Woolridge and Jose Chavez to trail, 68-64, with 58 seconds remaining. Harris iced it with a free throw with one second left.

“We have an all-senior group with a lot of pride and they really got after it (in the second half),” Saint Coach Todd Morse said. “That was a very good team we played. To come back that much was fantastic.”
