COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Miscues Costly as Irvine Falls in 14th Inning

A two-base error and a wild pitch allowed Cal State Los Angeles to score in the 14th inning and defeat UC Irvine, 7-6, in a nonconference baseball game Thursday at Irvine.

Dan Perante reached second on a two-error play, took third on a groundout and scored the winning run on Steve May’s (0-1) wild pitch to drop Irvine to 0-2 for the season.

The score was tied, 5-5, after nine innings. Cal State L.A. (1-1) scored in the top of the 12th, but Irvine tied the score in the bottom of the inning on Matt Filson’s sacrifice fly to bring in Chris Hutchins.

Bryant Winslow hit a two-run home run to give Irvine a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Joe Furukawa had three hits with one run batted in and one run scored.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

UCLA 7, UC Irvine 2--Jennifer Mazgedian was Irvine’s only winner in singles, and the team of Stacey Cadigan and Quynh Le were the lone winners in doubles for the visiting Anteaters (1-1).

In California Coastal Conference men’s basketball:

Pacific Christian 86, California Christian 81--Mike Vincent had 30 points and Kenny Crawford had 29 points and 17 rebounds for Pacific Christian at Cal State Fullerton.
