BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Brethren Christian Falls to Whitney in Overtime

Brethren Christian’s hopes for winning the Olympic League boys’ basketball title took a bad turn Friday night when the Warriors lost to fifth-place Whitney, 54-51, in overtime at Whitney.

Brethren Christian (18-4, 9-2 in league) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but Whitney (12-8, 6-5) scored the first five points of the overtime and held on for the victory.

Brandon Stott scored 14 points and Chiron Hart added 13 for Brethren, which trails league-leader Valley Christian by one game.

In another Olympic League game:

Whittier Christian 77, Ayala 45--Mark Berokoff scored 18 points to lead Whittier Christian (11-10, 8-3) at Ayala.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 70, Cal Lutheran 37--Ryan Westendorf scored 16 points for host St. Margaret’s (14-6, 6-1).

Liberty Christian 71, St. Michael’s 48--Toby Curto scored 21 points and Dave Vaccaro 19 for host Liberty Christian (11-8, 5-1).

In the Century League:

Foothill 77, Santa Ana Valley 60--Sean Amos scored 22 points and Nick Konopisis added 15 for visiting Foothill (12-10, 6-2). Leo Maldonado scored 20 and George Alvarado added 19 for Santa Ana Valley (2-15, 0-8).

El Modena 86, Villa Park 59--Leading, 69-48, after three quarters, host El Modena (16-7, 7-1) outscored Villa Park, 27-11, in the fourth quarter to win easily. Mike Terry scored a game-high 27 points and Robert Baytosh and Gavin Brown each scored 15 for El Modena. Ryan McArthur scored 18 and David Monsolino scored 16 for Villa Park (4-14, 1-7).

Orange 66, Canyon 65 (2 OT)--Carlos Duran scored 29 points for host Orange. Duran had two three-pointers and 10 points in the fourth quarter and Jason Lee converted two free throws with five seconds left to tie the score, 52-52, at the end of regulation. Canyon led, 52-47, with a minute left in the fourth quarter.

Canyon went on an 8-0 run to start the first overtime period and Orange started fouling to slow the charge. Canyon made only one of three free throws in the last minute. Orange converted two baskets after missed free throws and Duran hit a three-pointer with four seconds left to send the game into the second overtime tied at 61.

Duran scored a three-pointer to give Orange a 64-63 lead. Charles Sanders hit a jumper to put Canyon ahead, 65-64, with 15 seconds left, but Duran was fouled in the backcourt on the ensuing play. He converted two free throws for the winning points with six seconds left.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 91, Santiago 42--Center Jermaine Galloway scored 21 points and had eight rebounds for Kennedy, which remained in sole possession of first place in the league at (13-8, 10-1).

Rancho Alamitos 78, Los Amigos 73--The Vaqueros (8-10, 5-6) held a 45-35 lead at halftime and went up by 20 points in the fourth quarter, but had to hold back a late rally by Los Amigos (3-18, 1-10).

Bolsa Grande 66, La Quinta 45--Dinh Le scored 16 points to lead host Bolsa Grande (7-12, 5-6).

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 77, El Toro 46--The Cougars (20-4, 7-1) took control of the game early and dominated at El Toro. David Sedgwick and Steve Ransom each scored 18 points for the Cougars. Dave Canfield scored 10 for El Toro (10-12, 2-6).

Irvine 65, Dana Hills 59--Forward John Molle (31 points) made five of seven free throws in the final quarter, including two with his team holding a two-point lead, to give Irvine the victory.
