A cargo theft ring was broken up with the arrests of seven men and the recovery of $250,000 in stolen merchandise, mostly bicycles and industrial sewing machines, authorities said Wednesday. The arrests were made Monday along a South-Central Los Angeles street where two stolen 40-foot cargo containers were found, and Tuesday at a house in East Los Angeles where 100 industrial sewing machines and other goods were discovered, Sheriff’s Deputy Rich Erickson said.

An informant’s tip led investigators with the sheriff’s Cargo Criminal Apprehension Team to begin surveillance Monday of two stolen cargo containers parked at Broadway and 41st Place. The containers were filled with new bicycles.

Three men were arrested about midday near the containers. Ernesto Ponce, 22; Aaron Sandoval, 34, and Renee Osna, 31, all from Mexico, were arrested and booked on suspicion of receiving stolen property. Bail was set at $5,000 each.
