COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : N.C. State Brings Down Ninth-Ranked North Carolina, 97-91

Rodney Monroe scored 23 of his 37 points in the second half and North Carolina State unleashed a barrage of three-pointers to upset ninth-ranked North Carolina, 97-91, Wednesday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Raleigh, N.C.

The Wolfpack, 12-6 overall, 5-3 in the ACC, built an 80-68 lead with 5:21 left, but North Carolina (15-4, 4-3) rallied by hitting seven three-pointers of its own.

Hubert Davis’ three-pointer with 51 seconds left pulled North Carolina to within 92-91, but the Tar Heels didn’t score again.

Monroe sank two free throws three seconds later and added two more with three seconds left.

Tom Gugliotta had 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolfpack, which hit 12 of 23 three-pointers.

Rick Fox scored 22 points for North Carolina.

No. 18 Kansas 85, No. 15 Nebraska 77--Richard Scott scored the first six points in a 14-4 second-half surge that pushed the Jayhawks past the Cornhuskers in a Big Eight Conference game at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas (16-4, 5-2), which is 11-0 at home this season, dropped Nebraska (18-4, 4-3) out of a three-way tie for the Big Eight lead with the Jayhawks and Oklahoma State, which beat Iowa State.

Kansas held a 56-55 lead early in the second half when Scott, who had 14 points, banked in a 10-footer to start the decisive run. Moments later, Scott’s basket gave the Jayhawks a 60-55 lead, then he stole a Nebraska pass and scored on a layup.

No. 20 Georgetown 79, Providence 65--Dikembe Mutombo had 20 points and eight blocked shots, and Alonzo Mourning added 15 points and six blocks as the Hoyas downed the Friars in a Big East Conference game at Landover, Md.

Joey Brown added 17 points, including seven free throws in the final four minutes for Georgetown (14-6, 7-3), which had only one basket in the final 10 minutes but still avenged a 72-69 defeat at Providence last month.

Providence (13-8, 4-6), got 25 points from Eric Murdock.

Arkansas State 76, No. 21 New Orleans 65--Bobby Gross scored 20 points and the Indians knocked off the Privateers in an American South Conference game at Jonesboro, Ark.

The Indians (14-7, 5-3) sank 13 of 14 free throws in the final four minutes to pull away.

Tank Collins and Dwight Myvett scored 19 points each for New Orleans (19-4, 7-1), which never caught up in the second half, drawing no closer than four points.

No. 22 Oklahoma State 83, Iowa State 62--Byron Houston scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and the Cowboys downed the Cyclones in a Big Eight game at Stillwater, Okla.

Oklahoma State (16-4, 5-2) held Victor Alexander, the conference’s leading scorer with a 24-point average, to six of his 14 points in the first half.

Damon Lopez had 20 of his 26 points in the first half and grabbed 13 rebounds as Fordham (18-5, 5-0) beat Colgate, 85-73, in a Patriot League game at New York for its 11th consecutive victory. Devin Hughes had 22 points for the Red Raiders (5-16, 2-5). MIDWEST

Doug Smith scored 27 points, including four straight in overtime, to lead Missouri (13-7, 5-3) past Colorado, 75-67, in a Big Eight game at Boulder, Colo.
