Mary Barreto, who was elected to the Oxnard school board in November, has been appointed to the state Ethnic Advisory Council for Hispanics, an advisory group to Bill Honig, state superintendent of public instruction.

The announcement of Barreto’s appointment was made at Wednesday’s board meeting by Oxnard Supt. Norman R. Brekke.

“There are a limited number of appointees to the council,” Brekke said. “They are a very select group of folks who provide assessment to the superintendent on ethnic education in the state.”

There are three such councils, each with 12 appointees, representing Afro-Americans, Asian-Pacific Islanders and Hispanics. Honig formed the councils in 1984 in response to ethnic concerns, Brekke said.

Barreto, who holds a doctorate in psychology, has attended a meeting of the council held in Anaheim. She has been appointed to the youth policy subcommittee.

“I am very, very pleased,” Barreto said.
