The heavyweight championship fight between George Foreman and Evander Holyfield, scheduled for April 19 at Atlantic City, N.J., may be shifted to Las Vegas a week later, one of the promoters said Thursday.
Co-Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc., citing problems with Donald Trump, said the fight probably will be held April 26 at Caesars Palace.
Arum and Dan Duva of Main Events were guaranteed $11 million by Trump to hold the fight at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, but Arum said Trump told him he would attempt to invoke a “war clause” in the contract and renegotiate the fee to a reported $5 million or $6 million.
Arum said Trump proposed such action because he apparently can’t make a $2.5-million payment to the promoters that is due Saturday. The original contract with Trump was signed on Jan. 12 but amended on Jan. 20 after the war in the Persian Gulf began.
“This whole war thing is preposterous,” Arum said. “That clause applies to the day of the event only. Short of an invasion of Atlantic City by Saddam Hussein, it has nothing to do with this fight.”
