Duarte : Work Program for Youths
Minors in trouble with the law may now work for City Hall instead of going to Juvenile Hall.
The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement with the Los Angeles County Probation Department to participate in the Juvenile Alternative Work Service Program.
With judges’ approval, offenders between the ages of 13 and 19 may be assigned to city work, such as clearing weeds and debris.
Although the youths may be assigned work in other cities, they will mostly work in their own community, according to Don Anderson, Duarte’s director of safety coordination. The city will pay the county $350 to $400 a day for the services of each work team, consisting of 10 to 14 minors, Anderson said. The city will decide where and when the team will work.
El Monte and Pasadena also participate in the program.
