COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Goodcase’s Homer Propels Anteaters
Mike Goodcase hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Bryant Winslow had a double, a triple and three runs batted in as UC Irvine defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 10-1, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at UC Irvine.
The victory was the fifth in six games for the Anteaters (6-5).
Joe Sewell (2-1) pitched six innings, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out five for Irvine.
In another nonconference baseball game:
Christ College Irvine 11, The Master’s 1--Paul Weldon went three for four to raise his batting average to .600 and drove in three runs for host Christ College (6-2), which scored six runs in the fifth inning. Gary Sussman (3-0) pitched five innings and allowed two hits and no runs.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
UC Irvine 5, Arizona 1--The Anteaters (4-1), ranked No. 25, dropped the No. 1 singles match but won the other five to defeat No. 17 Arizona (5-3). Mike Roberts won at No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Carsten Hoffmann won, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to turn things around for Irvine. Other winners for the Anteaters were Charles Wheeler, 6-2, 6-3; Jeff Miyamoto, 6-3, 6-2, and Randy Ivey, 6-3, 6-4. The teams did not play doubles matches.
