Truck Kills Man Pushing Cart on Freeway Ramp

A transient pushing a shopping cart full of cans along a freeway acceleration lane near an on-ramp in Cerritos was struck and killed by a pickup truck Wednesday, authorities said.

The transient was in the acceleration lane at the top of the Del Amo Boulevard on-ramp to the northbound San Gabriel River Freeway about 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, California Highway Patrol Officer David Boyland said.

A pickup truck driven by Arthur Perez, 20, of Downey struck the man as Perez was accelerating onto the freeway, he said. The driver told officers he was looking to the left to check traffic while merging onto the freeway and did not see the pedestrian. The transient was believed to be among the homeless who live in bushes along the freeway and collect cans and other materials for recycling to earn money, he said.
