Orange 76, California 47--The “Dome of Doom” at Orange claimed another victim, but this one was special.

Orange’s runaway victory over California was the Panthers’s first postseason victory in basketball since 1984.

Orange (15-8) did it with relentless man-to-man pressure defense, which held California to 26% shooting (17 for 66) from the field, and forced 24 turnovers.

“We figured if we got in their passing lanes and limited them to one shot, we’d have a good chance to win,” said first-year Orange Coach Richard Bossenmeyer, who led the Panthers to their first winning season since 1985-86. “And that’s what happened.”

Orange guard Carlos Duran scored a game-high 24 points, and added six steals, even though he played only the first three quarters.

At one point in the second quarter, Orange led, 27-4.

Craig Fahrner scored 14 points off the bench for Orange, which also got eight apiece from Thu Huyhn, Noah Kimbwala, and Jason Lee.

Guard Paul Martinez led California (12-12) with 19 points.
