GIRLS ROUNDUP : Brownson Leads Torrey Pines Past San Marcos

Torrey Pines ran to a 15-point first-quarter lead, then held on to a 49-43 victory over visiting San Marcos in the first round of the girls’ Division II basketball playoffs Wednesday night. San Marcos (12-12) trailed 43-42 with 1:40 remaining, but scored only one point after that.

Daphne Brownson led Torrey Pines (15-11) with 15 points, four assists and two steals; Colleen Peck added 14 points, including a school-record four three-pointers.

Tammy Hinrichs led San Marcos with 18 points and Tami Oviatt added 16. Torrey Pines plays at Point Loma Saturday in the quarterfinals.

In other Division II games:

University City 53, Helix 32--Ninth-ranked University City held Helix to fewer than 10 points in each quarter, routing the Highlanders (10-11) at University City. Amy Cleveland scored 19 and Charlotte Kornik 14 to lead the Centurions (20-4). Teammates Jessica Birchler had 11 rebounds and Jenny Gross eight assists. Nicole Cando had 12 for Helix.

Castle Park 61, Mission Bay 36--Mission Bay trailed 8-0 in the first, tied it at 10-10, but never challenged fourth-seeded Castle Park (21-4) after that. Christina Murguia scored 10 of her 12 pints in the first quarter as the Trojans took a 20-12 lead into the second period. Delores Odom led with 15 points. Autumn Bailey had 12 and Erica Ockert 10. Castle Park has a home game Saturday against University City. Antoinette Cocco scored 15 and Kristen Grebing 13 for Mission Bay.

Point Loma 62, Mar Vista 23--Stacy Wainwright scored 13 points, had 10 assists, seven rebounds and five steals to lead third-seeded Point Loma (24-2), which faces visiting Torrey Pines on Saturday. Lisa Griego scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds and five steals for the Pointers. Mar Vista (10-12) scored 12 points in the first quarter, but only 11 over the final three periods.

Division I

Southwest 65, San Diego 41--Southwest (16-5) easily advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals at Fallbrook. San Diego finished 4-19.

Fallbrook 56, Hilltop 36--Fallbrook (17-7) jumped on Hilltop early, leading 33-12 at the half and cruised from there. Marcia Jeffries led Fallbrook with 17 points, Jessica Paris added 11 and 5-10 center Stacey Fordice had six points and 17 rebounds. Fallbrook will host Southwest in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Granite Hills 67, Orange Glen 37--Christina Adams hit seven of 17 from three-point range and finished with 27 points for third-seeded Granite Hills (19-7). Sallie Wade scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Orange Glen finished 3-12.

Rancho Buena Vista 62, Morse 44--Jenny Fellars scored 15 pints and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Rancho Buena Vista (13-12).
