COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Ventura Rolls Lucky 13 in 24-11 Win

Thirteen was a lucky number for the Ventura College baseball team Saturday. A record-setting number. A game-winning number.

Ventura trailed Antelope Valley by a run entering the top of the seventh inning, then scored a record 13 runs en route to a 24-11 nonconference victory at Antelope Valley.

Carlos Rios, Ross Gotwals, Kasha Clemons and Darrall McMillin each had two hits in the inning to key the attack for Ventura (12-2). The Pirates had 10 hits and were helped by three errors in the rally.

The 13-run inning broke the school record of 12 but the overall outburst fell short of Ventura’s single-game record of 32 runs, set in 1984 against Compton.

Anthony Romero was four for six and McMillin had three hits and drove in five runs for Ventura. Antelope Valley is 2-9.

In other baseball games:

Moorpark 3, Hancock 0--Mike Jenkins improved his record to 4-0 and Rob Teasdale earned his fifth save as three Moorpark pitchers combined to limit Hancock to seven hits.

Jenkins allowed four hits and struck out four in four innings. Mike Keegan was two for three with a double for Moorpark (8-5).

Canyons 1, Laney 0--Roland De La Maza (1-2) scattered four hits and retired 16 batters on ground balls in a complete-game victory in the Merced tournament. Bill Horvat’s second double of the game knocked in Ty Powell in the fifth inning for the only score.

Horvat and Jon Beauchemin each had three hits for Canyons (2-8-1), which won its second game in a row. The Cougars will play in the championship game of the four-team, double-elimination tournament today.

Westmont 5, The Master’s 3--Craig Johnson and Dan O’Sullivan each had three hits for The Master’s (5-5) in a nonconference game at Westmont (8-7).

Mt. San Antonio 13, Mission 7--Gabe Chavez had four hits and Roy Lozano and Eddie Chavez each went three for five for Mission (7-9) in the championship game of the Mt. SAC Tournament. In a semifinal game, Mission beat East L.A., 4-1, behind Nino Romo’s complete game.

SOFTBALL

San Diego State tournament--Cal State Northridge dropped a pair of contests to Utah State.

The Matadors lost, 3-2, in the first game and 1-0 in the second to fall to 8-13, 2-5 in the tournament.

Michelle Blaha and Leilani Artis drove in the only runs of the day for CSUN, which let a 2-0 lead get away in the first game.
