Lake Chatsworth Fire Station Closure Halted
- Share via
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday delayed indefinitely a scheduled March 1 closure of the Lake Chatsworth fire station while the county Fire Department looks for money to keep it operating.
Supervisor Ed Edelman, who proposed the delay, said the fire hazard caused by the drought makes it particularly important that the 57-year-old station remain open.
Edelman encouraged the county Fire Department, which estimated that the station costs $1 million a year to run, to explore alternative funding sources, including support from Ventura County and taxing the 4,300 residents who live in the area.
The board approved the delay on a 3 to 2 vote, with supervisors Pete Schabarum and Deane Dana dissenting.
Residents of the area said they were thrilled by the delay, but less than enthusiastic about the possibility of being asked to pay for the service.
