Unearned Runs Cost CSUN in 3-0 Defeat

After what started as a promising trip, Cal State Northridge returns home with two consecutive losses and two areas of doubt in its infield.

UC Santa Barbara scored three unearned runs to beat the visiting Matadors, 3-0, Tuesday in a nonconference game.

The Gauchos, who improved their record to 11-5-1, took advantage of two throwing errors by shortstop Mike Solar to spoil a good pitching performance by Scott Sharts.

Sharts, selected a tri-player of the week by Collegiate Baseball magazine, threw a five-hitter while suffering his first loss in five decisions.

UCSB pitcher Scott Longaker pitched a seven-hitter to improve his record to 4-0.

Solar, who led the team with 29 errors last season, twice overthrew first base, leading to two unearned runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh. He leads the team this season with 10 errors, but his job is not in jeopardy.

The Matadors might have to make a change at third base, however. Denny Vigo injured his right hamstring and left the game in the seventh inning. He was sliding into second base in an attempt to avoid a potential double play when he sustained the injury.

The Matadors (13-6) had runners at first and third with two out in both the eighth and ninth innings but failed to score.

Craig Clayton, Scott Richardson and Mike Sims each had two hits for Northridge.

After being on the road for two weeks, Northridge returns home to play University of San Diego in a Saturday doubleheader.
