Two people were killed in unrelated accidents early Saturday after speeding drivers lost control of their cars and crashed into roadside objects, authorities said.
In Laguna Beach, Robin Newcomb, 21, died after the car she was riding in veered off Laguna Canyon Road in the Big Bend area and slammed into a tree, Laguna Beach Police Sgt. Michael Hall said.
The 1990 Ford Mustang was traveling “at a high speed” when it hit the tree, killing Newcomb instantly around 1 a.m., Hall said.
The driver, Bart Schramm, 21, of Laguna Hills, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, Hall said.
In Santa Ana, a man was killed shortly after midnight when his car broadsided a telephone pole, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Dick Faust said.
The man was leaving the El Garibaldy bar on East Warner Avenue when the accident occurred. “He left the parking lot at such a high speed that he lost control,” Faust said.
The man, whose identity was withheld, was killed instantly.
