HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS : Palos Verdes Closes Out With Title

By fall, Palos Verdes High will be but a memory.

But on Saturday night, the Sea King girls gave the student body something to remember by routing Lompoc, 69-36, in the Southern Section Division III-AA championship game at Cal Poly Pomona.

The game marked the third time in four years that Palos Verdes made it to the finals. The Sea Kings won the 3-A title in 1988 and lost to Brea-Olinda in the 3-AA championship last year. This fall, Palos Verdes, along with Rolling Hills and Miraleste highs, will merge to form Peninsula High.

Sea King guard Kristen Mulligan led all scorers with 24 points.

DIVISION II-AA

Brea-Olinda 50, Ventura 42--Junior forward Jody Anton scored 18 points and senior center Jinelle Williams added 16 as the Lady Cats beat the Cougars. It was the first title for the top-seeded Lady Cats (29-1) in the higher division after winning the Division III-AA and

Division III-A championships in 1990 and 1989, respectively.

DIVISION II-A

Irvine Woodbridge 47, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 37--The Knights proved their own worst enemy, committing 23 turnovers and hitting only 15 of 58 shots in the loss.

Woodbridge (25-4) faired slightly better, making 40% of its shots (16 of 40). Woodbridge’s Deanna Harry led the Warriors with 21 points and 21 rebounds. Lily Cabaleiro had 14 for the Knights.

DIVISION III-A

Playa del Rey St. Bernard 73, Costa Mesa 71--Joi Turner, a 5-foot-4 sophomore guard, hit an 18-foot shot at the buzzer to give the Vikings (25-6) the victory.

St. Bernard (25-6), which advanced to the title game from the qualifying round, won their first section championship in the school’s 30-year history.

DIVISION IV-A

Santa Maria St. Joseph 86, Riverside Notre Dame 45--Twin sisters Anna and Amy McConnell led the Knights (23-5) at Hancock College in Santa Maria. Anna finished with 27 points, Amy with 11.

DIVISION V-AA

Hemet Baptist Christian 53, Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep 39--The Warriors (22-4) got 15 points from Joy Clark and broke the game open in the third quarter at Citrus College in Azusa.
