Officers shot and killed a pit bull after it attacked a police dog that was brought in to help in the investigation of a shooting, police said Monday.

Two officers had been summoned to a Huntington Street residence at 10:25 p.m. Sunday when a neighbor suddenly charged out of his house, fired shots into the air and ran back inside, said Police Lt. Ed McErlain. Police said the initial call was unrelated to the surprise firing.

The officers called for backup units, and a perimeter was set up around the house in the 19000 block of Huntington Street. Todd Krejci, 23, surrendered to officers, and five other people from the house were temporarily detained, police said.

“In order to determine if any additional subjects were in the house, a canine was called in,” McErlain said.

As the dog’s handler, Officer Jim Weaver, was announcing his entry into the house, a pit bull “came crashing through the screen door and attacked the canine, Kim,” McErlain said.

Weaver fired at least two shots at the pit bull, which charged at another officer, police said.

“The officer fired a shotgun at the pit bull, striking it and killing it,” McErlain said.

The police canine was not seriously injured, police said.

Krejci was arrested on suspicion of firing a gun in a negligent manner.
