Westlake Opens Season With Smart 6-0 Win

Share

Strong pitching and timely hitting became a habit at Westlake High last season, and eventually led to a No. 1 national ranking by USA Today and a trip to the Southern Section Division 5-A semifinals.

If the Warriors’ season-opening performance Monday is indicative of what is to come this season, it could be more of the same.

James Clark and Don Snyder combined on a three-hit shutout and Westlake needed only eight hits to hand Cerritos a 6-0 loss in the first round of the El Segundo tournament. Westlake, which won the tournament last year and is ranked fourth in the Division 5-A preseason poll, used six Cerritos errors to score three unearned runs.

The victory was the 40th in 53 games for third-year Coach Rich Herrera, who became the school’s all-time victory leader. Herrera passed Dennis Judd.

Clark, a senior left-hander who was 7-1 with a 1.31 earned-run average and was an All-Ventura County selection last season, struck out five, walked one, and allowed three hits through five innings. Snyder, a junior right-hander, contributed two innings of hitless relief and struck out two.

Rob Neal was three for four with two runs, two runs batted in and two stolen bases. Todd Preston was two for three with an RBI and stolen base.
