Enger, English Named to All-West Coast Team

Former Vista High standout Chris Enger was one of two University of San Diego women’s basketball players named to the All-West Coast Conference team. Enger, a 6-foot-5 sophomore center who is the Toreras’ all-time shot blocker, and Christy English, a 6-3 senior forward from Scottsdale, Ariz., were selected.

English averaged 13.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and was second in the WCC with a .541 field-goal percentage. Enger was USD’s second-leading scorer (13.2 ppg) and led the team in rebounds (8.7 ppg) and blocked shots (3.6). Enger received postseason honors for the second consecutive year. She was named Freshman of the Year in 1989-90.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers re-signed free-agent safety Derrick Kelson. Kelson (6-0, 187) was a member of the Chargers’ developmental squad during the 1990 season. He was drafted in the 11th round out of Purdue by the New York Jets in 1990.

BASEBALL

UC San Diego edged USD, 10-9, in a slugfest at USD’s Cunningham Stadium. The Tritons outhit the Toreros, 16-15, and scored nine runs between the second, third and fourth innings. Kevin Hathaway (1-0) pitched four innings of relief for the victory for UCSD (3-8). The game was called after eight innings because of darkness.

UC Riverside rallied for four runs in the second inning and five in the eighth en route to an 11-4 route of U.S. International at Players’ Field. Mike Whisonant (0-5) suffered the loss for the Gulls (5-12) while Tom Tennison (1-0) got the victory in relief for the Highlanders (11-5).

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

USD swept a doubleheader from visiting Regis (Colo.), 7-6 and 10-4. Amy Reinard delivered a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener and Laura Cisneros drove in five runs with a homer and a triple in the second game. The Toreras improved to 3-5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Mike Mattarocci, who had 17, led four San Diego State players with 10 or more kills as the Aztecs swept Loyola Marymount, 15-11, 15-4, 15-9, in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Peterson Gym. SDSU improved to 10-3, 5-2. The Lions fell to 2-10, 1-9.

GOLF

USD’s men finished third in the rain-shortened Cal State Sacramento Invitational, shooting 312 as a team and finishing behind UC Irvine (303) and Stanford (309) at Rancho Murietta Country Club.
