Sunny Hills had its shot. The Lancers rolled into the Southern Section 2-A Division boys’ basketball playoffs at the Los Angeles Sports Arena with a 17-game winning streak, including a 14-0 Freeway League record.

But Sunny Hills’ shots were mostly off--27.5% (16 for 58) from the field and 44% (11 for 25) from the free-throw line--and the Lancers lost to Glendale, 68-43.

Glendale Coach Steve Keith, now coaching at Irvine, expected a tough game but was surprised when Sunny Hills made just six of 24 in the field in the first half and was trailing, 26-13.

“We we’re just sitting in the locker room at halftime thinking we gotta be the luckiest team in the world,” Keith said. “They literally gave us a spot in the finals.”

Mater Dei won its third consecutive section title in four years by easily defeating Serra, 86-59. The 5-A championship capped a 29-0 season for Mater Dei.

Center LeRon Ellis and forward Stu Thomas each scored 30 points, and Ellis had 12 rebounds.

“We were able to get the ball inside at will,” Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight. “How could this get old? This is the highlight of high school sports: winning a CIF championship.”

Amy Jalewalia scored 32 points, and Heather Brannan scored 25 as La Quinta won the section 4-A girls’ championship by beating West Torrance, 72-62.

La Quinta had won nine consecutive Garden Grove League titles and finished second in Division 2-A in 1985. Jalewalia scored her points against West Torrance despite being double- and triple-teamed.

“They were so worried about Amy that all she had to do was just swing it to the other side (to Brannan),” La Quinta Coach Kevin Kiernan said.

And just like that, La Quinta was swinging to the winner’s side.
