Junior College All-Stars Boast 4 Local Players

Four Valley-area sophomores have been chosen for the North-South junior college all-star basketball game.

Sam Crawford of Moorpark, Lester Neal of Ventura, J. R. Rider of Antelope Valley and Nick Sanderson of Canyons are among the eight players on the South roster. Four players will be added from teams competing in the final eight of the state championships. The game will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at UC Irvine’s Bren Center.

Cal State Northridge will compete in a multiple-team track and field meet at Azusa Pacific on Saturday.

The Matador men will be matched against UCLA and Azusa Pacific, and the Northridge women will face UCLA, California and Azusa Pacific.

The UCLA men’s and women’s teams were ranked second in Track & Fields News’ 1990 national dual-meet rankings.

The men’s hammer throw will be at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s shotput and high jump, and the men’s long jump at 11. The women’s 400 relay will be the first running event, starting at 12:45 p.m.

Hurdler Tyrone Jeffries will lead the Northridge men, and sprinter Charlotte Vines and hurdler Kim Young top the Matador women entrants.

The Canoga Park High basketball team has been invited to play in the Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic next season, according to Coach Jeff Davis. Rancho High of Las Vegas will play host to the 32-team tournament.

Canoga Park posted a 9-16 record in 1990-91 but featured two of the top sophomores in the area in Steve Woodruff (6-foot-3 forward) and Arthur Bradford (6-5 center).
