Burglary Suspect Killed by Officer in North Hollywood : Shooting: Police report a gunman was shot after pointing his weapon at the patrolman. Department officials say the action appears to be justified.

A Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a suspected burglar on a North Hollywood street Tuesday morning after the man pointed a gun at him, police said.

David McMahon, a 38-year-old patrol officer and 17-year police veteran, fired six shots at the unidentified man, hitting him in the back and left thigh, said Lt. William Hall, head of the Los Angeles Police Department squad that investigates shootings involving officers.

Hall said the shooting appeared justified.

“There’s nothing we see that’s out of line at this point,” Hall said.

Hall said McMahon will undergo a psychological review before a decision is made to either return him to patrol duty immediately or assign him to station work.

Two other men believed to have been involved in the 3:30 a.m. burglary in the 11400 block of Killion Street near North Hollywood Park were arrested a short time later. None of the men were identified, but Hall said all appeared to be in their late 20s or early 30s.

Hall said officers went to the neighborhood to investigate a burglary reported by residents of a house at Killion Street and Camellia Avenue. The residents told police they heard someone in their yard.

When police arrived, a man emerged from some bushes and began running east on Killion Street. As McMahon and another officer chased the man, two other men ran to a car parked on Camellia Avenue. Other officers in a patrol car at the scene followed the car south on Camellia Avenue toward Chandler Boulevard.

Hall said the man pulled a .25-caliber handgun from his waistband as he ran and turned toward the officer. McMahon told investigators that he drew his 9-mm semiautomatic pistol when the man pulled the gun. McMahon began firing when the man turned to face the officer, Hall said.

McMahon fired six times. One shot hit the man in the back, apparently as he turned back to flee, Hall said. Another bullet went through the man’s left thigh. The man then stumbled and fell. He died a short time later at AMI Medical Center in North Hollywood.

No one else was injured.

Police found the other two men hiding behind buildings near Lankershim and Magnolia boulevards about half a mile away. Hall said the men were tracked down by police dogs after the pair abandoned their car. A pellet gun and a fake gun were found in the car.
