COLLEGE BASKETBALL NCAA WOMEN’S ROUNDUP : Virginia Rolls to Victory; Vols Advance

Second-ranked Virginia used a 24-6 run in the second half to defeat No. 25 Oklahoma State, 76-61, Thursday night in the semifinals of the NCAA Women’s Midwest Regional at Austin, Tex.

The Cavaliers (29-2) will meet Lamar (29-3) in the regional final Saturday.

Heather Burge scored 19 points and Tammi Reiss and Dawn Staley each scored 14 points for Virginia, the top-seeded team in the tournament.

The Cowgirls (27-6) were led by Lisa McGill, who had 17 points.

No. 24 Lamar 91, No. 9 Arkansas 75--Brenda Hatchett made six three-point baskets and scored 23 points to lead the Lady Cardinals.

MIDEAST REGIONAL

No. 4 Tennessee 68, No. 10 Western Kentucky 61--All-American center Daedra Charles, held without a point or rebound in the first half, had 11 points and eight rebounds in the second half at Knoxville, Tenn.

Tennessee (27-5) is the top-seeded team in the Mideast. The Hilltoppers finish 29-3.

No. 6 Auburn 58, Vanderbilt 45--C.C. Hayden scored 16 points for the Lady Tigers, who held the Lady Commodores without a point for more than 10 minutes of the first half. Auburn is 26-6.

EAST REGIONAL

No. 21 Clemson 57, James Madison 55--Peggy Sells’ only shot of the game, a 14-foot jumper with two seconds left, gave the Lady Tigers (22-10) a win over the Dukes (26-5) at Philadelphia.

A layup by Brandy Cruthird with 1:06 remaining gave James Madison a 55-53 edge, but Cheron Wells made two free throws for Clemson to tie the score at 55-55 with 45 seconds left.

No. 13 Connecticut 82, No. 7 North Carolina State 71--Kerry Bascom scored 23 points and Laura Lishness added 22 points as the Huskies (28-4) upset the Wolfpack (27-6).
