Poway’s Kara Berg spent much of the season sharing the spotlight with teammates Allison Brady and Stephanie Guerena on the Titans’ 3-A section championship team.

But Saturday night at Serra High in the County-City Girls’ Basketball All-Star Game, Berg stole the show as she scored 15 points to lead the County to a 87-74 victory.

Berg, a 6-foot-2 senior center, made 11 of 12 free throws and grabbed six rebounds.

“I didn’t have to score much on our Poway team because we had such good players,” Berg said. “But (Saturday), I was looking at the basket more.”

She also had something else in mind when she took the court.

“I want to play college basketball really bad,” she said. “I knew there was going to be a lot of people here.”

Berg has received letters from Loyola Marymount, Azusa Pacific and the University of San Diego, but she said Azusa seems the most interested.

“Hopefully, it’ll happen for me,” she said. “They say good players play well in big games.”

Berg got some help from Granite Hills’ Christina Adams and Santana’s Desiree Weimann, who scored 17 and 15 points. Adams started slowly as she missed her jumper badly, but she warmed up in the second half--sinking three three-pointers.

Santana’s Stephanie Thompson scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the County, which led after every quarter.

The county led just 19-15 after the first quarter, but widened the margin to 41-30 at the half. The City closed to 62-55 late in the third quarter, but City Coach Dorothy Robinson of Lincoln was called for a technical after protesting a call.

Brady made one of two technicals and Vista’s Alicia Gerken hit an 18-foot jumper at the third-quarter buzzer to give the County a 65-55 lead.

Lincoln’s Sheila Dixon led the City with 24 points, Point Loma’s Stacy Wainwright added 17, including three three-pointers, and Mira Mesa’s Tyffanii Evans had 11.
